In response to President Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the disastrous JCPOA, the leader of the Islamic Republic has announced that Iran will increase its production of certain elements required to procure nuclear weapons. A day after calling Israel a “cancerous tumor … that must be removed from the region”, Khamenei warned European leaders that his country would resume full nuclear operations if their countries abide by the new US sanctions placed on the regime. He also stated that Iran would not comply with European requests to curtail its missile program or its destabilizing behavior in the region.
While French President Macron was visiting Washington in April, President Trump stated that “Iran would have bigger problems than it’s ever had”, if it were to resume restricted nuclear activities. What will the US response be if the Islamic Republic follows through on these threats? What side of the fence will European leaders be on?
